Aussie Facts

So you are thinking of getting an Aussie. Do you know that just one is not enough? With that in mind, here are some facts to consider.

The Australian Terrier is small, sturdy, and full of spirit & courage stemming from his background as a working dog in the outback of his homeland, Australia. The Aussies were developed to be vermin hunters, going after rats, rabbits and snakes. They are also used extensively as sheep herders and guards. They often take the role of "watch dog" alerting the family of dangers. The Aussie is confident and ready for anything, and is adaptable to most climates.

His love for all people, especially children, the elderly and the health challenged, is surpassed only by his love for food.

They can pass their Canine Good Citizen Programs with flying colors.

Being among the smallest terriers, the Aussie is 10-11 inches at the shoulders and weighs in at about 14-18 pounds, the females usually being on the smaller side of the standard. They are keen eyed, spirited, extremely intelligent, very friendly, with a very affectionate disposition, which makes them a wonderful companion and friend.

Not for the sedentary of heart, as Aussies are very active. However, they can become couch potatoes late into the evening, spending as much time with the family as possible. They willingly share the chair or couch with you. Having a fenced area in which to run, the Aussie will expend some of his pent up engergies. Australian Terriers are excellent candidates for Obedience Trials, Agility, and Earth Dog Trials. Some participate in the Fly-Ball Exercises, as well. Always ready for the walk-about the block, Aussies do well in keeping their humans in shape as well as themselves.

The Australian Terrier comes in three varieties of colors, "Blue-Tan", which is blue neck and saddle with a rich tan head, legs and tail; and the solidly Red; or solidly Sandy (lighter red). Australian Terriers are all terrier through and through. They will stand their ground when threatened, and tend to wander if not contained by fencing.
